Steam per tonne of feed is what most plants quote, and it moves every time the feed changes. Steam per tonne of acid gas removed is normalised to the duty the unit is actually doing. The platform trends both — and when the honest one drifts, it names the fault behind it.
Steam per tonne of feed and steam per tonne of acid gas are trended side by side. When the feed sours up the first gets worse while the plant is doing more work, not less. Ten signals are then ranked against the honest ratio — circulation, lean temperature, acid gas load, reboiler temperature, reflux ratio and the rest — so the strongest bar tells you where to look first.

Excess steam is a symptom with named causes
Lean/rich exchanger fouling means the rich amine arrives colder and the reboiler makes up the difference, quietly, for months. Reboiler scaling means more steam for the same duty. Under-stripping and over-duty are a two-sided error the engine tells apart. Excess energy is one of six costed consequences, carrying a figure per hour.

Bad steam, not more steam
Reboiler heat input is read with the desuperheat trim and the supply pressure alongside it. That is what separates a reboiler that genuinely needs more duty from a utility system delivering superheated or under-pressure steam — a supply problem no amount of valve opening will fix.

The 127 °C line
Reboiler temperatures are tracked against the point where thermal degradation of MDEA accelerates. Energy pushed in above that buys stripping and pays for it in solvent life, which the platform prices as a separate consequence rather than leaving it out of the sum.
